Volunteers enjoy behind the scenes visit to Mourne Park
Last month (May 2022) volunteers from across Northern Ireland were invited for a special behind the scenes visit to our newest woodland – Mourne Park.
Spanning an impressive 156 hectares this once privately owned estate is home to 73 hectares of precious ancient woodland. The Woodland Trust Northern Ireland started working in the estate 5 years ago assisting the family with ancient woodland restoration, now after 500 years in the ownership of the family the Woodland Trust became the custodians of the woodland in 2021.
Since then the team have been working hard to secure funding, continue restoration work and at present working on the upgrade and introduction of new trail networks set to open to the public later this year.
As a special private visit we welcomed 12 NI volunteers to enjoy a behind the scenes guided walk, taking in the special features and carpets of bluebells before we sat down and enjoyed a much needed lunch.
Since securing Mourne Park we have welcomed new volunteers who will be helping us restore and maintain our newest treasure and we are excited for them to join the WT volunteer team!
