Be part of the UK’s first ever tree Mapathon on 9 April 2022!

Can you help us complete a map of tree cover in the UK’s urban areas? Forest Research and the Woodland Trust invite you to take part in a project which will impact the future of our urban green spaces. After two years of hard work from dedicated volunteers, the map is almost finished and one final push could give a complete picture of the UK’s urban canopy cover. That’s why we’re running the Mapathon.

To join the Mapathon and contribute to the map, you don’t need any specialist knowledge – just a few hours to spare on Saturday 9 April.

Step 1: join an introductory webinar

Sign up for one of our introductory one-hour webinars at either 10am or 2pm to learn more about the project and the mapping tool. We’ll also prepare you for doing your own assessment to help complete the most comprehensive map of urban canopy cover.

Step 2: Carry out two (or more!) assessments

Following the guidelines from the webinar, visit your chosen wards to map their trees. Each assessment takes up one hour to finish and will add crucial data to the overall map. We’ll also be running a drop-in Zoom session throughout the day for anyone that needs help with their assessment.
