A Message from our CEO Darren Moorcroft
Under normal circumstances, at this time of year, I would be sending you a message to thank you for your support for our work. In spite of the challenges that Covid-19 has meant for all of us, we have been more than encouraged by the recognition that woods and green spaces have been so important to people in these troubled times. We thank you for all your support.
However, I am sad to inform you the Woodland Trust has been the victim of a sophisticated, high level cyber-incident. As soon as we became aware of the incident we engaged a group of external specialists who launched an investigation and also took immediate action in order to mitigate the impact. We reported the incident to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), the Charity Commission as well as the Police Cybercrimes Unit. What has become evident is that these sorts of attacks have become all too prevalent during the Covid-19 pandemic.
We are continuing with our analysis and at this stage investigations have found no evidence that our data has been compromised. We understand knowing the nature of any data that may have been impacted is important and would like to reassure you that this is a priority area of the investigation.
In the meantime, as a precaution, we are encouraging all our supporters to be mindful of any suspicious activity, especially unexpected emails or phone calls from unknown sources or purporting to come from your bank.
I wanted to reassure you we take the security of our system extremely seriously and are doing everything we can to resolve the issue. I understand you might have questions regarding this. Our switchboard is open for calls on 0333 212 6314 or you can email us at firstname.lastname@example.org. We have also provided further information and advice on our website here and a list of FAQ for volunteers here.
As chief executive of the Woodland Trust, I can assure you we will continue to invest in our security and expertise to safeguard our systems going forward.
As and when new information becomes available, we will of course share further updates with you.
We greatly appreciate your support for trees and woods. Your support is even more important in these troubled times.
