Smithills Update 4th Dec
We have some new members of the volunteer group this week – welcome to
Joe Holt – joining both the Patrollers group and Wildlife Group
Sue Fielding, Dawn Axon, Gillian Marsh, Babs Winder, Chris Speed, Stephen Tonge, Karen Mather, Dorothy Snelson, Stirling Smith and Linda Smith joining the History Group
Stirling and Linda are also joining the Patrollers group.
And also Ella Standish and Katie Thompson who joined a little while ago and are now joining the Wildlife Group.
Online photography exhibition
Our photographers have been spending time in lockdown putting together an online exhibition, which is now live! You can have a look here
Congrats to Karen, Alan, Liz, Tony and Bev on a fabulous exhibition.
Alex has been podcasting!
Alex was interviewed along with our CEO Darren Moorcroft for the ‘Tree Lady Talks’ podcast – Alex chatted about volunteering at Smithills (and was as always excellent!). Listen here: https://www.buzzsprout.com/1230629/6571870
Deer fencing is going up around the new tree plantations on the Estate. The gates are quite big – because the fence needs to be so high – but the gates are always unlocked. Please ensure you close the gates behind you to keep the deer out!
We have wi-fi at Walker Fold car park! If you check on your phone you should see the network pop up J
You will also have noticed the car park machine at Walker Fold – you don’t need to pay to park at the car park, it’s a voluntary donation machine (we have ordered some bigger signs to explain this!)
The overflow car park at Walker Fold is currently closed, awaiting some improvements to the surface (it’s a tad soggy at present) – that should be happening very soon.
Restoration work on the moorland is also due to start soon, and quite excitingly this will involve helicopters! They will be dropping stones and heather brash at points on the moorland – all with the aim of blocking drainage, rewetting the moor and helping to promote regrowth.
Richard, our tree contractor, is out and about planting trees on the Estate – we haven’t been able to do our public tree planting days but the trees still need to go in the ground so he has sorted that for us! Hopefully we can contribute again next year.
Visitor Guide app
You can have a look at the Woodland Trust Visitor Guide App via Google Play or the App Store – take a look at the Smithills content there, Tony’s history walk has just been added!
Mass Trespass 125
There will be events in Bolton next September to mark the 125th anniversary of the mass trespass on the Estate. A couple of meetings have already taken place with lots of local organisations planning to be involved. Tony has attended these and reported back, and the Woodland Trust definitely has a part to play in the celebrations. We will keep you updated on any opportunities to get involved!
