Northern Forest Quarterly update
For some, the global pandemic has really highlighted just how vital our green spaces are in this country for our health and mental wellbeing. Personally, being able to go on a walk a day with my dog during lockdown was one of the most important things I was doing for myself every day and I’m lucky to live in an area where there are many different walks on the doorstep. Even on those days where I might not have been feeling up to going for a walk, Luna made sure she got her hours exercise!
I must admit I was surprised at just how many applications we were getting from landowners for woodland creation in the Northern Forest, in the middle of a global pandemic when there are plenty of other things to prioritise, but it did really motivate me when I got back to work in July.
So far, there are 63ha committed (52 schemes), 112ha in the pipeline, so at the pre site visit (69 schemes), and the a further 6ha defined as expression of interest (have not yet applied fully). A very healthy pipeline for any year and particularly this one.
We are also at the very early stages of engaging in some reasonably large scale agroforestry schemes in the Norther Forest too, which could incorporate alley cropping with fruit and nut trees, likely starting 21/22 planting season- so definitely watch this space.
