Smithills on Film
On Monday and Tuesday the whole Smithills team were busy turning the Estate into a film set! Over the two days we filmed footage in the woodlands, grassland and on the moor for three exciting projects: a short promotional film about Smithills, a longer information film explaining our work and Lottery-funded successes, and pre-recorded segments for our first live online family-friendly event!
For our short films, local company Sitcom Soldiers worked with us to create a series of scenes capturing the landscapes of Smithills and the feeling of adventure and escape we offer the visitors. Tracey, Vicky, Jonny, Karen and Kelvin all feature in the films, and given COVID-safety limitations on numbers we even took the parts of ‘members of the public on the Estate’, with Kelvin being a trail runner, Vicky and Tracey moorland walkers, and Karen (plus Ava & Toby!) being our ‘Smithills family on a day out’. The films also feature some of our social enterprises (our own foraging wizard Colin Unsworth, and the Cakery food concession), and some of our volunteers. We will be using the films to promote the site and hopefully build on the visitor numbers we have seen over the last few months.
Roberta, meanwhile, was filming for our online Wildlife Buzz Awards, our virtual version of our annual BioBlitz. This family-friendly event will highlight wildlife species who are ‘trending’ this year, and feature pre-recorded segments from three of our key habitats – woodland, wetland and moorland. At the live event families will be able to interact with our top wildlife stars – a noctule bat, a skylark, and a keeled skimmer dragonfly (played by the Rusticus theatre team!) and speak to a wildlife expert too. The event, on 1 August, is the first in a series of Zoom events Roberta has planned, and we are really excited to see how they go!
