Successful Volunteer Thank you Event – 29 June

Successful Volunteer Thank you Event – 29 June

A great day was had by all at the recent volunteer get together at Welshpool on Saturday 29 June.

Volunteers and staff, including Wales’ Director Natalie Buttriss, met at the village hall for tea and biscuits followed by an update and discussion of the Trust’s work in Wales including:

  • The work of the outreach team increasing tree cover on farmland
  • Tree planting and the Woodland Trust 10 year strategy
  • Phytopthera infection at Cwm Mynach in North Wales
  • Developments at Llennyrch farmhouse
  • Site acquisition at Brynau, Neath, South Wales
  • Plans for a National Volunteer Panel
  • New developments for Whittle – password will not be needed for articles

We all enjoyed a delicious lunch at Derwen Garden Centre, as well as rehydrating due to the rather warm weather.

Becky explained how the trees were planted just before she joined the trust – the great crested newts in the pond are closely monitored by professionals

Guided by the Site Manager Becky Good, we had a wander around Granllyn pool – we explored this relatively small planted wood and found out about the large pool complete with great crested newts. There’s also a board walk, a bird hide, information board, orchard area and space to park 2 small cars.

Next stop was Gaer Fawr a much larger woods and a massive hill to walk up! There’s a bronze age hill fort at the top and wonderful views to enjoy. There was much informal discussion of restoring planted ancient woodland, how run a guided walk and tree identification – as well as local history including the late 1800s find of a bronze boar (6cm long) now housed at the National Museum of Wales.

Gathered around the seat depicting the bronze boar

Volunteers kindly gave feedback on the day – they want more of the same!

Volunteers attending the day received a small token of our appreciation for all their time and effort – a pack of Woodland Trust postcards and limited edition Volunteer pen.

Diolch and Thank you to all our volunteers across Wales – hope to see you at the next regional thank you event. Look out for these advertised on Whittle and your quarterly email newsletter.
