North East Volunteer Gathering
It was lovely to be joined by so many of you at our North East Volunteer Gathering, which took place at Gibside Estate, near Gateshead last Saturday.
After a beautiful, if slightly invigorating 20 minute walk across the estate in the sunshine, the morning was spent in the historic old stables building, with updates from Richard Wilson and Nick Swinburn, our NE site managers. We were also very kindly joined by Ben Holden from Living Woods North East, who came along to tell us all about the exciting new practical group activities we are developing together in partnership. A big thank you also needs to go out to volunteer, Alan Hunton, who joined us at short notice for a talk on the ancient tree inventory and recording ancient trees, thank you Alan!
After a yummy lunch, the afternoon was spent out on a history guided walk on the estate. Provided by National Trust guided walk leaders Angus and Anthea, we delved into the fascinating history of the estate and the twists and turns of the fate of the family that owned it! Thanks to the national Trust for providing such a perfect venue and to everyone that came along to make it such an enjoyable day.
