Can you help us tackle the pesky Canadian goldenrod at Warren Farm, Surrey?
There is nothing like the beauty of a meadow in bloom and if you have visited Warren Farm near Cheam, Surrey, in summer, you will know it is no exception. But, did you know that the bright yellow flowers that you see are actually harmful to our native wildflowers and a range of butterflies that depend on them? The site has been invaded by Canadian Goldenrod. It is best removed by hand and volunteers are vital in tackling the problem. It’s great exercise and we are seeking more amazing people to help us transform the whole space into a haven for wildlife by helping pull it out of the ground. It is exciting to see the progress so far – the numbers of butterflies including the rare Small Blue Butterfly are increasing as a result of some really hard work of our dedicated volunteers. With 95% of lowland meadows disappearing in recent years, Warren Farm is a special place to look after and we are seeking willing volunteers on Saturday, 1st June 2019 between 10:30 – 15:00 to help us kickstart our series of volunteering events over the summer, not to mention the start of Volunteers’ Week 2019! A group of volunteers from Royal Botanical Gardens, Kew, will be joining us too so do come along and say hi!
As well as learning how to identify and remove the invasive Goldenrod, there will be other fun activities to enjoy including free bushcraft and crafting activities for all ages and guided walks around the meadow. The event is free to attend on a drop-in basis and all are welcome – even the dog! It is also the perfect spot to enjoy a picnic lunch, so please do bring one along.
Seeing a mountain of weeds pile up throughout the day is a visibly satisfying reward for your efforts. So come join us for a bit of fun and help create a lasting habitat for our native wildlife and our children. However long you can join us for, you are most welcome!
