Smithills Update 22nd Feb 2019
New Estate Ranger
Our new Ranger, Andy Thorn, started this week. He will be taking over volunteer management for our practical task days, and also for our wardens and practical group leaders. He is looking forward to meeting our volunteer group!
Next Volunteer Task Day – 10 March
Is… you guessed it… tree planting! This will follow on from our community planting days in the preceding week and as a one-off for community planting week we are joined by Bolton Conservation Volunteers.
Wildlife on the estate
We have had reports of barn owls on the Estate in higher than previously, and the long-eared owls have been spotted out hunting. The first butterflies and bees are being spotted out and about also – spring is coming!
Our guided walk leaders had a training session last weekend and are raring to go – plans are progressing for various routes across the estate, so look out for bookable walks later on in the year!
We have a few community projects are in development at the moment, which we will update you as these progress. One which now has a start date is the series of dementia-friendly walks, which we are running in conjunction with City of Trees. These will start on April 4th, led by Rhys Wynne from City of Trees. Rhys has led dementia-friendly walks for City of Trees in other Manchester boroughs and we are hoping the programme here will be popular. As part of this, I am hoping to run a ‘dementia friends’ session (see https://www.dementiafriends.org.uk/ for info on Dementia Friends) which all smithills volunteers would be welcome to join.
