Deer Jump Success at Arkaig

“Oi! Those are my tatties!”

Trail camera images have shown an innovative approach to deer management is working well at Loch Arkaig.

We have built a fence to protect part of the pine wood. We would very much like deer to be able to get out but then not get back in again.
Two ramps have been constructed about 80m apart. There is a gentle slope rising up to the fence from inside, with a sheer drop to lower ground level on the outside.
A generous portion of spuds encourages the deer to take a look.
They are more confident jumping down than they are jumping up a vertical obstruction, so this is an effective one-way escape route for animals trapped inside when the fence was built.
