Ben Shieldaig Appeal

Woodland Trust has launched a £1.6M appeal to buy a whole mountain. Fingers crossed the spectacular Ben Shieldaig will be in our care by Spring!

There is a short video about the site here.

Ben Shieldaig is in the Torridon range in the North-west highlands. It currently hosts two special forest habitats – ancient Caledonian pinewood and a temperate rainforest of native birchwood. These are both already in excellent condition. We plan to encourage natural regeneration in and around these existing woods. A combination of natural regeneration and planting could see a tripling of woodland cover on the mountain.

This is a rare opportunity for us to bring a whole mountain under our care. Our aim is to see native woodland, montane scrub and open moorland habitats meshing naturally with each other from sea to sky. That would encapsulate all that a restored landscape can be, not just in Torridon but across the Highlands.

We hope to recruit a site manager and a project manager.

More details of the appeal are on the Woodland Trust website.
