Smithills Update

Hope everyone is well and enjoying the autumn weather. Here is a round-up of what is coming up at Smithills over the next month or so, in terms of volunteering, events and activities.

Task days and practical training days

There is a hedgelaying practical day, led by Bolton Conservation Volunteers, on Sunday 18 November. For further details please contact the Smithills team

Wildlife monitoring

The fungi ID day (led by Dave Winnard) and the mammal ID day (led by Stuart Fraser) went well. The next wildlife event is the Winter Wildlife Walk on 10 November – places can be booked here: https://woodlandtrusttickets.cloudvenue.co.uk/smithillswinterwildlife

Russ Hedley will also be arranging to meet with the wildlife monitoring group to discuss training and surveying for 2019.

History group

We had a really enjoyable talk from Dr Paul Salveson on Barrow Bridge this month. The next meeting of the group is on Tuesday 13 November, 6.30pm at Smithills Hall.

Smithills Estate events

Just a heads up on other events happening on the estate in November:

Woodland Photography Workshop with Heather – Sunday 18 November – places can be booked here: https://woodlandtrusttickets.cloudvenue.co.uk/smithillswoodlandphotographywalk

Creative Writing Workshop – Saturday 10 November – further details and booking here:

Upcoming volunteer training opportunities

In addition to the practical session with Bolton Conservation Volunteers, we are looking to enable those volunteers who wish to, to apply to become Group Leaders for practical task days and for events. Those volunteers will be offered health and safety training with Nick Hall (the Woodland Trust’s H&S manager) in December, and First Aid training (date TBC). We hope that this will allow us to expand the volunteer patrolling opportunities, as discussed at the last Supporters’ Group meeting, and give volunteers more opportunity to be involved in community task days and in events. If you are interested in being a Group Leader (or want to know a bit more about what it involves), then let me know and I’ll send you further info.

The training for leading guided walks is due to start in January, this is happening in conjunction with volunteers across the wider North region but one session will be held here at Smithills and I will keep you updated about that.

Next Smithills Supporters’ Group meeting

This will be held on 4 December at 6pm (slightly earlier time than usual). The first part of the meeting will be an induction session with Claire Green. I know that some of you have already attended an induction – so feel free to miss this part and join us at 7.30pm for the regular meeting if that’s the case.

That’s everything for now… if you need more info about anything just let me know. It’s been a busy month here on the Estate, thanks to all of you who have given up time this month to help with events and activities at Smithills. Here’s some highlights:

Mammal ID workshop with Stuart Fraser

Lantern walk

Lantern making workshop

Construction continuing on the Walker Fold Gateway, due for completion in November.
