Scotland volunteers – can you help us on 11 and 12 August at our Cairngorms Forest Fest?

We are looking for volunteers to help out this coming weekend at the fantastic annual Forest Fest that takes place at the Highland Folk Museum (HFM), Newtonmore, this year on Sat 11 & Sun 12 August.  We’ve had a few people drop out so we are on the look out again!  It’s great fun, so we hope that a few of you can make it!

‘Forest Fest’ has run for a few years now.  It is a relaxed, family friendly, day time event; this year will be our 4th; and it has grown a little each year. Initially the idea behind the event was to demonstrate Ancient Woodland Restoration (AWR) techniques, by thinning the pinewood, to both release broadleaves in the understorey, and to allow the pines to put on more incremental growth.  Over time, we would hope that the woodland will develop more species, and structural diversity. And because the event was at HFM, we did this by traditional methods, felling trees using hand tools – axes, and double handed saws, and logging out the timber using horses. The timber was then milled on site, using a mobile saw mill, and used in building projects on site. In subsequent years we added in some woodland culture activities, to try to highlight the variety of ways that people have interacted with trees and woods over the years, and this year we expect to include green woodworking, woodland arts and crafts, forest school activities, forest teas and cordials, some music, storytelling, and tree climbing.

You are welcome to attend for one or both days, and will be able to claim expenses.  If you will need accommodation, please let us know (contact details below). We have a few rooms booked for Fri, Sat, & Sun evenings at a hostel in Newtonmore.

If you would like to help out at the event, or have any queries, please drop Alan Crawford an email: AlanCrawford@woodlandtrust.org.uk or give him a call; his mobile is the best number to get him on: 07740 449940.
