Looking after young trees during the hot spell

In this period of hot, dry weather:

  • The best thing you can do for your trees is ensure they are weeded well. Weeds left in place will compete for available ground water and place significant pressure on young trees. We can’t over-estimate the value of this, and the significant difference it will make to tree establishment and survival.

  • If you have access to recycled water (from water butts etc) then do water young trees – ensuring the water soaks the ground

  • If the hot, dry weather persists, and only if it doesn’t contravene water use regulations in your area, water young trees if able ensuring the water soaks the ground
