Ancient woodland restoration HLF project update

The Project has been active for the last 4 years in x10 Project areas across the UK with a Project Officer based in the regions to advise local landowners on the Restoration  of Ancient Woodlands planted with Conifers post war.   We call these sites Plantations on Ancient Woodland Sites or PAWS for short.  The Ancient Woodland Restoration Project is finishing on the 31st March 2018.    We have had amazing volunteers supporting this area of work carrying out a wide range of different roles  from Woodland Heritage Research,  Volunteer Speakers, Fixed Point Photography, Land Registry Checks, supporting us at events, botanical surveys to name but a few.  We are currently working with those volunteers to secure their next volunteering opportunity and to ensure that they are supported by a task manager.

We are  still gathering in the data for the project, but to date, we have achieved the following which I thought I would share with you.

AWR Outputs Achieved to date
Total number of Hectares of PAWS Assessed across the x10 Project areas Over 20,000Ha

Total number of Hectares of PAWS Committed to Restoration across the x10 Project area Over 15,000Ha.

Total number of volunteer days to date contributed towards the Ancient Woodland Restoration Project 2191 Days.

Looking Forward

Ancient Woodland Restoration has now merged with Woodland Creation to form an Outreach Department.  A strategy for Outreach was written before Christmas and therefore it will be a while before the staff are clear about their roles going forward.    We will keep you updated with any new develops with volunteering opportunities within Outreach going forward.

On Behalf of the Ancient Woodland Restoration Project I would like to thank everyone who has supported us over the last 4 years.
